We removed 80% of our agent’s tools

Vercel simplified their d0 text-to-SQL agent from a complex multi-tool system to one with only bash command access, improving success rate from 80% to 100% while reducing latency and token usage. The case study demonstrates that simpler agent architectures with fewer guardrails often outperform over-engineered designs, as modern language models handle complexity better without artificial constraints.
