As consumer AI tools make deepfakes trivially easy to create, a cottage industry of detection startups has emerged to combat them. Reality Defender, Pindrop, and GetReal use machine learning to identify manipulated media, but face a fundamental challenge: creating convincing deepfakes is often the most effective way to test detection. Corporate fraud is now "industrial," with incidents costing up to $1M per transaction.
