OpenAI acquired Astral, the company behind Python tools uv, Ruff, and ty, to strengthen its Codex coding agent by integrating developer tooling directly into AI-assisted workflows. The acquisition mirrors Anthropic's December 2025 purchase of Bun (a core Claude Code dependency), framing both deals as an arms race to own the developer toolchain layer beneath AI coding agents. OpenAI says the tools will remain open source, but there's concern that uv ownership could be used as competitive leverage against Anthropic.
